In 1992, Amanda Bossard began her study of marine biology in Anchorage from Alaska Pacific University. Bossard started her commercial seafood career in 1999, when she began working on the ship F/V Sunset. This 65' schooner that was converted into an ice-fish tender was owned by Murat Aritan. The fisherman has been in commercial fisherman since 1993. Bossard, who is engaged to Aritan and has joined their teams to take over their businesses. They are both proponents of conserving renewable and sustainable marine resources. Otolith is an independent wholesale distributor of seafood which was founded within Philadelphia in 2007, by a now-mother of two kids, Bella aged 3, and Andre one year old. The name Otolith is an affectionate reminder of Bossard's intimate knowledge about fish biology and her husband's many connections in the seafood business. They are often separated for 5 months each time they pursue financial and environmental goals that show their determination and autonomy wherever they are. Bossard along with her son Andre and daughter Isabella will return home to Southeast Alaska every summer as deckhands during the salmon season. A small 42-salmon troller, using hooks and line to capture their salmon, they are joined by Aritan for two months selling to local processors and continuing to expand their direct-market seafood items sold via Otolith Sustainable Seafood by way by purchasing custom processing capabilities of small processors to create unique wild-caught seafood that reflects their dedication to quality and the environment.
